As a union of the creative and cultural sector, the Arts Union is actively concerned with the developments of generative AI and its impact and consequences the impact and consequences on the creative field. The organization is committed to fair and humane laws and regulations for the development of generative AI so that it does not come at the expense of the people who created the work with which AI is trained. In late February, the Arts Union published a Position Paper AI.

The development of generative AI is moving at lightning speed and its effects on the cultural labor market are already being felt. People in the cultural and creative sector worldwide are very concerned. These concerns are also present in the Netherlands, and rightly so, notes the Kunstenbond. Action must be taken quickly. That is why the Kunstenbond is presenting the Position Paper: Generative artificial intelligence (AI).

While Big Tech's generative AI systems function well, this is only possible because they are trained with the work of creators and artists. These creators and (performing) artists are then squeezed out of the marketplace by that same AI. And that's without their ever having given permission, let alone receiving compensation for it.

The Arts Union stands for a generative AI that is legitimately trained, not at the expense of human creators and (performing) artists, but at their service. The Arts Union therefore publishes the Position Paper containing a rationale for this position and what is needed to achieve it.
