Communal Enthusiasm

The exhibition Communal Enthusiasm shines a light on the various episodes, milestones and people who have helped shape the Jan van Eyck Academy over the past 75 years. The basis of the exhibition is a survey of artifacts dating from the late 1940s to the present. Almost all of the artworks in the exhibition were created by former participants, advisors and directors of the academy. The exhibition also includes a selection of objects from the academy's archives and depositories: technical relics, instruments, administrative documents and remnants of previous exhibitions.

The artifacts show certain trends that demonstrate the history and character of the academy. They recount the secularization of art, the rise and fall of aesthetic trends and the way in which in the postwar years craft training in the arts gave way to more conceptual and research-based and, in recent years, more discursive forms of work.
