Groundbreaking collaborations between artists and scientists can hardly use existing schemes of funds for culture or science. This is the conclusion of the Academy of Arts and the Young Academy after an exploration among culture and science funds. In a letter to Robbert Dijkgraaf, Minister of Education, Culture and Science, they argue for a national fund that facilitates cross-pollination between artistic and academic research and supports collaborations between artists and scientists.

They advise the minister to start a KxW pilot fund for a period of three years, with a budget of eleven million euros, in cooperation with, among others, the National Culture Funds, NWO and Regieorgaan SIA. They also provide concrete guidelines for the organization of the fund: about the type of research, the amounts to be allocated and the assessment of applications.
