Recent Allocations Mondriaan Fund

In the past few months the Mondriaan Fund has announced many new grants. Below we list some of them.

Regulation on programmes for arts venues 

During the 2021 application round, the fund will contribute over 3 million to the programmes of 22 art venues in the Netherlands, ranging from small art initiatives to organisations with an extensive programme of activities. The venues receive the contribution "for a publicly accessible programme that contributes to the development and presentation of contemporary visual art". The contribution for a period of 1 to 3 years concerns 25,000 to 175,000 on an annual basis. The scheme has four categories: Start, Basic, Pro and Broad. For this application round, 74 applications were submitted. 

Start

For small art initiatives and collectives with a programme of experimental presentations and activities: 25,000 for a calendar year. There were 40 applications. Five applications were positively assessed, but could not be awarded due to lack of budget. Awarded (12 institutions): Darkmatter Collective (Amsterdam), Destination Unknown (Weert), Yes Yes Yes No No (Amsterdam), Greylight Projects (Heerlen), The Resort (Groningen), Omstand (Arnhem), RADIUS (Delft), Salwa Foundation (Amsterdam), San Serriffe (Amsterdam), SEA Foundation (Tilburg), Shimmer (Rotterdam), Video Power (Maastricht). 

Art platform Basis

For small professional organizations that have had an annual program of presentations and activities for contemporary visual arts for at least two years: 110,000 per year, for two calendar years. There were 26 applications. Three applications received a positive review, but could not be awarded due to a lack of budget. Awarded (8 institutions): Bewaerschole (Burgh-Haamstede), Club Solo (Breda), Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen, Kunstpodium T (Til- burg), Metro54 (Amsterdam), Odapark (Venray), POST/Expoplu (Nijmegen/Arnhem), Rib (Rotterdam). 

Art platform Pro

For professional organisations from local to (inter)national level: 175,000 per year, for three calendar years. There were 6 applications. Awarded (2 institutions): If I Can't Dance, I Don't Want to be Part of Your Revolution (Amsterdam), Nest (The Hague). 

Arts Centre Breed

For fully professional organizations from local to international level: 275,000 per year for four calendar years. There were two applications, neither of which were granted. The budget for this category will be retained for the next application rounds for Programs in Arts venues and may be awarded in 2022 or 2023. 

Film and visual arts 

The Short Presentation is a joint covid-19 support measure of the Film Fund and the Mondriaan Fund and offers visual artists the possibility to realise a short, artistic film. There were 68 applications from which 18 projects were selected, from both new, starting and experienced visual artists.

Coronasteun

The Mondriaan Fund awarded a contribution to 196 organisations to compensate for the financial shortfalls caused by the covid-19 measures. The contributions were awarded as follows: 2.9 million for art galleries, 7.4 million for museums with a private collection, 7.6 million for organisations facing reductions in staffing levels and 6.7 million for collection policy staff. The amount of a contribution varies. The allocations for the compensation scheme for makers are not yet known. 

Artist Base

Thirty artists were awarded a grant under the Kunstenaar Basis scheme, intended for visual artists who have been working as professionals for four years or more: Marjolein Rothman, Mels van Zutphen, Lydia Schouten, Maria Blaisse, Karen Sargsyan, Johannes Büttner, Anne Wenzel, Willem Harbers, Hans Lemmen, Anika Schwarzlose, Jan van der Pol, Rini Hurkmans, Charlotte Dumas, Marjan Teeuwen, Dick Verdult, Tarona Leonora, Gerbrand Burger, Steven Jouwersma, Ryan Oduber, Michiel van Bakel, Chikako Watanabe, Art van Triest, Margriet van Breevoort, Henk Stallinga, Jan Commandeur, Milou van Ham, Kathe Burkhart, Sophie Lee, Martin Freiherr von La Roche and Marjan Laaper. 

Artist Start

Nineteen artists were awarded a grant under the Kunstenaar Start scheme, which is intended for starting artists who have been working professionally for at least one to four years: Rick van Meel, Florens Kool, Florentijn Edelgonda de Boer, Diana Gheorghiu, Kimberley Dias, Nikolai Riedinger, Kristoffer Zeiner Christiansen, Stijn Ter Braak, Louisiana van Onna, Lorena Solis, Janne Schipper, Mattia Papp, Joanneke Jouwsma, Jan Philipp Hüskes, Marie-Louise Hodge, Matthieu Reijnoudt, Laura Jatkowski, Can Demren and Anna Frijstein. 

Trustee Observer

Eight curators and viewers were awarded the contribution Curator Spectator, for curators and viewers who wish to develop a plan for content in a defined period: Yasmine Ostendorf, Patricia van Ulzen, Heleen de Wit, Marguerite Tuijn, Hanne Hagenaars, Forough Bouwens-Sajadi, Saliha Gül Durukan and Pascal Gelling.
