What are the application options at the Mondriaan Fund for individual visual artists and what has been added to them in the context of the corona crisis? Let's take a look at it.

The information below is an abridged version of the whole. All conditions per scheme can be read on the website of the fund.

Contribution Young Talent

Intended for promising visual artists up to four years after their training. The contribution can be applied for after a year of artistic practice and can be used for everything related to the development of new work, such as research, materials, equipment and projects at home or abroad. It can also be used to participate in exhibitions and manifestations.

Starting visual artists without training

As a pilot project, from 2020 visual artists who have not followed a study programme with a visual arts curriculum can also apply for a Young Talent Work Contribution. They can apply if they have had at least one and at most four years of professional practice as a visual artist.

Amount: 19,000 euros for 12 months.
Apply: any time of the year.


Work contribution Proven Talent

Intended for visual artists who have had a professional practice for at least four years. The contribution is a compensation for the investment in material, time and services of third parties and enables artists to create new work and experiment. The contribution can be spent on anything related to the development of new work, such as research, materials, equipment or projects. The amount can also be used to respond to an assignment or to participate in exhibitions and manifestations at home and abroad.

Amount: 38,000 euros for a minimum of 24 months.
Apply: any time of the year.
Other: may be granted no more than once every four years.


Project Investment Artist

Intended for visual artists with a plan limited in time, such as the development of a concrete plan for new work, travel or work period at home or abroad, for example in a guest studio. Another possibility is a research period, a collaboration between a mid-career artist and a young artist or a work placement or apprenticeship with a renowned artist, cultural institution or company (except for educational institutions). This contribution can be applied for after three years of artistic practice or after three years of higher professional education (hbo) and one year of artistic practice.

Amount: flexible contribution for a maximum period of 12 months, the amount to be determined on the basis of the application, or a fixed contribution for a working period ranging from one to a maximum of six months, of EUR 2,200 per month.
Apply: any time of the year.
Other: can also be applied for jointly with other artists or mediators, in the form of a duo or collective.

in coronation time:

If projects, commissions, exhibitions and/or sales have been cancelled or postponed because of the coronary crisis, a temporary contribution can be applied for a work period of one to six months. The standard amount is 2,200 euros per month. The application is made via the regular Project Investment application form, but the requirements for the work plan are less extensive.


Contribution Presentation Abroad

Intended for internationally recognised contemporary art platforms abroad to show the work of living artists from the Netherlands, whether or not in combination with a contribution towards the production of new work commissioned by the foreign platform. Visual artists can also apply for this contribution for a presentation on a foreign platform.

Apply: submit the application well before the desired commencement date. If the application is submitted less than three months before the commencement date, it may not be processed.

Because of the corona crisis and its impact on presentations, allocated presentation costs (travel, accommodation and transport costs) and site-specific production costs only after a signed confirmation from the applicant that the presentation will definitely take place.


Voucher International

(Note: temporary arrangement until 15 November)

A shortened application procedure for artists and bemidde-laars (independent curators, critics, theorists or viewers) from the Netherlands to respond to an invitation from an international contemporary art platform, festival, cultural institution or organisation abroad which is taking place in the near future.
The contribution is intended for giving a lecture, a workshop or a performance or for attending an important symposium on contemporary visual art.

Amount: travel and accommodation expenses up to a maximum of EUR 2,500.
Apply: until November 15, 2020.

in coronation time:

Because of the corona crisis and its impact on international events, the grant will not be awarded until the applicant has signed a confirmation that the event will definitely take place. A further condition is that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued positive travel advice for the country in question.


Contribution Principalship

Intended for public and private clients or public-private partnerships who wish to realise publicly accessible visual art projects without the intention of selling them. With this contribution, the Mondriaan Fund stimulates initiatives that come about through collaboration and in which the creation of visual art is explicitly linked to its display.

Development contribution
Clients who do not belong to the museum system or the circuit of presentation institutions and art initiatives, such as social and community organisations or institutions, companies and private clients, also have the option of applying for a development contribution. This contribution may be aimed at the development of a vision, the hiring of specific expertise in this phase which leads to a mature plan, or the financing of the sketch phase. The aim is to generate more commissions outside the cultural sector.

Apply: any time of the year.


Contribution Publications

Intended for visual artists and publishers for the production of special publications about the work of living visual artists from the Netherlands. It also contributes to publications that in an innovative way printing on demand, e-publishing  or apps, as well as relevant technological innovations relating to digital media in relation to an art book.

Amount: will be determined per application. The maximum contribution is 35 percent of the production costs. If there is an innovative application of printing on demand, e-publishing or apps, or of any other technological innovation related to the publication, the maximum contribution is 50 percent.
Apply: twice a year. The deadlines in 2020 were in March and September. The deadlines for 2021 are not yet known.
