BK lecture by Esther Didden on Friday 2 July 2021 at 11.00 a.m.

Under the title Main conclusions for the future of art  in public spaces Esther Didden, project manager of the anniversary project of BK Information, on the morning of Friday 2 July, the BK lecture.

Art in public space: 100 key works

Throughout 2020, the BK-informatie Foundation celebrated its fortieth anniversary. First of all, 100 Key Works of post-war art in public space were announced. These can be found on sleutelwerken.nl. Then a campaign started under the hashtag #hat'swhat We wanted to find out in particular how works of art in public space have 'landed' in society. To conclude the jubilee, on 20 January 2021 the symposium Art in public space takes place.

During the lecture on 5 February, Esther Didden will discuss the most important conclusions of the symposium, where questions are discussed that were raised by the selection of the key works and the #hat'swhat campaign have proved relevant: Where do the responsibilities in public space lie? What responsibilities are incumbent on the authorities that fill in this space, and on the users, and what does this mean for the works of art in it? And what if the works of art are monuments, what forces then play a role? How do you realise a monument properly in this day and age?

And also, what is the use and necessity of fuss in art in public space? After all, art in public space is visibly present for all users of that space, and therefore often causes a fuss. When opponents stir, supporters usually rise up as well. The question of fuss is particularly interesting in combination with the tendency that has emerged in recent years to demand a more democratic form of commissioning, in the sense that it is not the elected representatives (province, municipality, institute) who are responsible for the realization of art in the public space, but precisely those who will be most affected by it: the residents and users of the places where the works are manifested. And will this in turn lead to the need for new mediators?
