National museum research

This year, the annual National Museum Survey of the Museum Association zoomed in on the consequences of the corona crisis.

Dutch people's attachment to museum collections remained strong in this corona year (47%). The slight increase in this relationship during the year under review is partly due to the growing digital offering of museums. 22% of Dutch people have already come into contact with this service, and the vast majority of them have a positive opinion of it.

Over two-thirds of the Dutch population will recognise the importance of cultural freedom by 2021. The importance that the public attaches to the fundamental right of free cultural expression/experience has increased. Seven out of ten Dutch people feel it is important for the government to contribute to the continued existence of museum collections.

At the time of the investigation, museums were still closed due to the corona measures. The Museum Association emphasises that the corona protocol for museums works well and that museum visits are possible in a safe and responsible manner, and calls upon politicians in The Hague to reopen the museums as quickly as possible, with the museum protocol in place and without additional barriers such as rapid tests. In addition, financial support must be promised for the second half of 2021, until the public once again visits museums in full numbers and their own incomes are back in order.
