"Without roots, you can't fly."

Esther Didden is in Groningen at the studio of Faisel Saro. It took two life-defining events for Faisel to decide to follow his heart and study at the art academy in Groningen. The first event was a chronic illness and the second a traffic accident. He is of Surinamese descent and his grandfather always said: if you walk on roads where you should not walk, the winti will knock you out of there.

In other words, when you do something that doesn't suit you, adversity follows. The traffic accident was the straw. He quit his job at the Internal Revenue Service and chose art. The love for art was always there, but finally he took it seriously. His body, which absorbed much of the adversity, is now an important concept in his work.

"Because of that accident, I saw that my body was also my concept. I knew: I'm going to map everything that's in the body - that feeling, that physical and that spiritual. And that's what I'm still doing today."
