“I am invisibly ill and felt a great need to be seen; that includes exhibiting.”

This week Esther Didden is in Diepenveen at the workplace of Hannelotte van Elst which she shared with Aalt van de Glind until a few months ago. Hannelotte is chronically ill. She worked as a photographer since graduation, but five years ago her health deteriorated and photography was no longer possible. She began to draw. At first just for herself but it became more and more serious. Her partner Aalt is a photographer and artist. Hannelotte sleeps a lot and he sometimes photographs her. He has been working for some time on a series that he Tired mentions. For both, making work is a way to relate to her illness.

“I can be an artist because my partner is an artist.”
