The new edition of the Culture Monitor, in which the Boekman Foundation analyzes key developments in culture, such as the recovery in audience reach, financial pressures and changes in funding streams, was recently released.
The new edition contains updated figures for 2023 (and where possible 2024) and has been expanded to include a new theme page on culture and money flows. Among other things, it calculated that there were at least 140.3 million cultural visits in 2023.
Museum attendance came back at after at precorona level, with an increase in the number of Dutch visitors. An important addition to the Culture Monitor 2024 is the theme page "Culture and money flows. This analyzes money flows from governments, private contributions and the cultural sector's own income.
The page reveals how the sector's economic base is developing. Other conclusions from the monitor include staff shortages and high workloads in the sector and the rise of AI technology.
Diversity and social safety also remain an important issue. Although the sector is slowly becoming more diverse, the latest OCW monitor shows that there is still work to be done in the area of diversity among staff, freelancers and supervisors. Women often outnumber men in creative studies, but earn 20% less than men on average in the visual arts.
