The province of Gelderland recently commissioned the second edition of the Gelderland Culture and Heritage Monitor. The purpose of the monitor is to assist in making and evaluating cultural policy at the provincial and local level. The monitor provides insight into developments in the social, economic and artistic value of culture and heritage in Gelderland, such as audience reach and employment.

Help create and evaluate cultural policies

The figures show that the creative sector in Gelderland has recovered well after the corona period, stronger than the national average. In fact, the Arts and Heritage subsector is in better economic shape than before the corona pandemic. With more than 3.5 million visitors, museums in Gelderland were well attended in 2023.

The monitor also shows that Gelderlanders continue to value culture and heritage and practice and visit in large numbers. Of residents, 89 percent visited at least one cultural activity and 74 percent visited a heritage site or event. Of Gelderlanders, 78 percent are culturally active themselves.
