Boekman #131: Artist and power

  • publications

The theme of this summer's Boekman is "artists and power," and it deals with transgressive behavior and unequal power relations in the arts and culture sector.

Artists get into this at many points in their careers to make: it begins, for example, as early as admission to a vocational school and continues when applying for grants and in contact with policymakers, for example.

Questions raised in this Bookman: in what ways are artists included and excluded during their careers, and what power does the artist himself hold?

This Bookman also discusses the ways in which power is defined. Furthermore, power relations and power practices in which an artist finds himself during his, her or its career are discussed. Equality in arts and cultural education is questioned and a case is made for a broader narrative in education as a catalyst for equality. Also unhealthy power relations in arts education are discussed and how they can be remedied. But it also addresses the power that the artist himself has, for example by exposing social injustices and thus initiating change.
